Our Story

Our story begins four years ago when I wanted to surprise my husband with a new dog.
We had just moved from Connecticut to North Carolina and had recently lost our last of three labs. My husband wanted another medium size dog that he could kayak and go fishing. I wanted a non-shedding dog that I could do agility with and train to be therapy dog. I started researching the breeds and the Portuguese Water Dog came up. I began to look for breeders near our home and that's when I found Cove's End Portuguese Water Dogs. I reached out to Marlene Nicewander who happened to be having a litter the week I contacted her. After talking to her she felt we would make a good home for one of her puppies.
On January 28, 2021 Cove's End Halley's Coming Around was born and we brought her home 8 weeks later.
To say Halley has changed our life is an understatement. We have fallen in love with the breed and are so lucky to have her. Halley is a true working dog, she excels at everything she tries whether it's agility, water work, scent work, obedience or conformation. Her temperament and desire to please is remarkable.
Since getting Halley we have become members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) and two local regional clubs Movers and Shakers and USSPWDC.
Halley has all her health testing recommended by PWDCA . All testing can be found on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) website.
For those of you considering a Portuguese Water Dog please research the breed well. This is a working dog. PWDs need a job and mental stimulation as well as physical exercise.

About Portuguese Water Dogs

The Breed

The Portuguese Water dog is a working breed. Theories date them back to 200BC! They worked with fishermen herding fish into nets and retrieving broken nets and tackle that fell overboard. They also acted as couriers between fishermen and from ship to shore. PWDs are very versatile and exceed in basically any performance sport if given a chance as well as therapy dog work. Portuguese water dogs also make excellent family members. We do NOT require that you show or do performance with our puppies. Placing a puppy in a show or performance home is only a part of our breeding program. We are equally pleased to find wonderful families who are looking for a companion dog. While they excel in agility, scent work, obedience, rally and water work they are excellent family members and loyal to their families.

Sea and Sky puppies are raised in the heart of our home and with lots of love. Each breeding takes a lot of thought and planning with other reputable breeders. We are not back yard breeders or a puppy mill. Each breeding represents years of expenses, careful observation of the parents and thorough health testing. Our most important criterion for breeding a litter focuses on structure, health and temperament.
